Rockcliffe Park is characterized by its rural park-like setting, with varied topography – narrow curving roads without curbs or sidewalks, many trees, generous lots and gardens, and houses set unobtrusively within a visually continuous, rich green landscape. It is relatively inaccessible to through traffic.
To the north, on the cliffs of the Ottawa River, there is public greenspace maintained by the National Capital Commission, also called Rockcliffe Park. It is transversed by a branch of the Sir George-Étienne Cartier Parkway. The parkway has several small parking lots along its length that enable visitors to enjoy the lawns, wooded areas, parks, and lookouts. There is also a large gazebo, and public restrooms. In the winter visitors can enjoy cross-country skiing and toboganning.
Where is it?
The area is northeast of downtown, on the southern banks of the Ottawa River. It encompasses the small McKay Lake, the Pond, and the Rockeries, two private school, and Rockcliffe Park Public School.
What makes Rockcliffe Park a Special place to live?
Living in Rockcliffe is a bit like joining a private club. The community is very tight nit and the social circle is very small and influential. The profile of the individuals that live here goes from high profile corporate executives to top level government officials, to embassy row. The community gets a lot of its cohesion from the fact that most of the home owners kids go to either of the private schools Ashbury or Elmwood. The lots are some of the largest in Ottawa and provide significant space and privacy. Crime is very low and security is enhanced by the fact that the neighbourhood is regularly patrolled by the RCMP’s embassy detachment. The tree lined streets are reminiscent of a by-gone era, where kids still walk to school and everyone in the community knows each other
The community is home to one public elementary school, Rockcliffe Park Public School (RPPS), and two private schools, Elmwood School and Ashbury College. Located beside the elementary school is a community hall/library complex.
There is no commercial activity in the village.
Rockcliffe Park is and has been home to many Ottawa notables, including former prime ministers, senior civil servants, corporate leaders and many ambassadors to Canada.
The Real Estate in “The Village” is dominated by single family homes with some of the largest and most prominent residences available in Ottawa. Entry level into this exclusive market is typically under $800.000, but even that does not get you much more then a lot. There area some large townhouse condominiums on the other side of Mckay lake near the Pond. These are available starting in the high $600,000.00.
